these are books I plan to read this summer. The list is based on recommendations, reviews and plain ole ‘you’ve got to read this’ suggestions. Only in London – Hanan Al-Shaykh (because other cultures fascinate me and the immigrants’ journey’s always thrilling) Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim – David Sedaris (Because he’s the funniest guy I’ve ever read) Eats, Shoots, and Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation – Lynne Truss (so that I never use ‘it’s’ when I mean ‘its’) Middlesex – Jeffrey Eugenides (I’m told it’s the best book I’ll ever read) Lolita – Vladimir Nabokov (I’m probably the one person who’s never read Lolita, well that’s about to change) The Bride Stripped Bare – Anonymous (“Just read it!” she squealed!) The Pornographer’s Poem – Michael Turner (Someone said, it has everything you’ll need: sex, drugs, porn and Vancouver!) Delano – John Orozco (I hear it’s a great, funny satire) CAD: Confessions of a Toxic Bachelor – Rick Martin (is it really that lame?) Latter Days – T. Fabris (my first shot at gay romance, let’s hope I like it) The Second Life of Samuel Tyne – Esi Edugyan (She’s Ghanaian… I’m probably required to read it!) Little Children – Tom Perrotta (what happens when you have kids and move to suburbia) The Namesake - Jhumpa Lahiri (Again the clash of cultures, trying to fit in…)
PLAYING: Amazing – George Michael READING: Only in London - Hanan Al-Shaykh WATCHING: Canadian Idol QUOTE: “celebrate the love of the one you're with”
