reflections on that thing i'm living called life!

this takes the cake

Last Saturday I had dinner at what must be the most god-awful restaurant in this city!

We picked it from my sister’s (2004) Entertainment Book which is this gargantuan book of coupons for discounts at restaurants, hotels, car rentals etc. It’s been great at helping us discover restaurants in and around the city; we’ve found some really good ones. Unfortunately last Saturday’s wasn’t.

Bearing the name of a famous lower Manhattan neighbourhood, the restaurant (I’m not naming names, just in case they were just having a bad night) was reviewed as a New York style eatery with west coast flair. The chef and owner (we’re told) worked for a very famous and elitist restaurant for years, leaving you to think he’s this culinary maestro whose divine artistic skills were being stifled by The Man so he had to (quit and) open his own restaurant where he could perform gastronomic wonders.

Tucked in an obscure (think: very hard to find even though it’s right there) location in downtown core, it moonlights as a club and mini art gallery on weekends. There was an art show on our night which made me feel very much like the local (it’s alleged to be a popular hang-out for locals).

The interior’s like an old western saloon with the bar/kitchen overlooking the seating area. We took the only seat available which was rather unsightly; it had water and drink spills, papers (which apparently were menus) and food bits on the table. We sat there for about ten minutes before our waiter (and the only waiter there that night) took our drink orders and cleaned the mess. The place had a creepy darkness to it, nothing at all like the soft (romantic) lighting decor (I think) they were trying to go for. The floor was untidy and the chairs uncomfortable.

I ordered a chicken linguine dish and my sister wanted something with fettuccini but they were all out. The waiter managed to loose someone’s dinner to the floor. We sat there close to 30minutes before our food was ready even though we’d seen it being tossed into plates 15minutes earlier. It just sat there for a good 15minutes! A strange paper was stuck to the bottom of my sister’s plate.

The food itself was disgusting! It was cold, tasted horrible and had a foul smell! I took a few bites and my stomach started to churn. I rushed home where I had the mother of all diarrhoeas all weekend long.

I don’t know about you but I sure ain’t going back!
