reflections on that thing i'm living called life!

look ma…

My mom would be so proud of me! I’m finally doing something that would make her really (really) proud! Not that she’s not already proud of me… but this time it’s something she’s always wanted me to do.

Growing up my mom took a ‘the-sky-is-the-limit’ approach when it came to goals; she truly believed and encouraged us that we could be anything we put our minds to. She used to say I couldn’t become a beauty queen if I had too many scars when I hurt myself playing. She said to eat my carrots because I needed good eyesight for when I become a pilot. She forced me to eat because I needed to be strong to become a firefighter.

The encouragements ceased when I grew older, I think she (sort of) stopped being proud of me because her approval would be testament and admission that my stepmonster was doing something right. Instead my quirks and flaws were emphasized to highlight my stepmonster’s shortcomings. Like truancy, disdain for adults, laziness and other teenage antics are habits I picked up from Alice (the stepmonster).

She however wanted some very basic things for me which hasn’t changed to this day; get a good education, marry rich comfortable (preferably Nicholas), have two children (preferably a boy and a girl), have a cat and a dog, get a good job, buy a big house and a people-mover (minivan), and help others. My dad on the other hand wanted me to become an accountant, plain and simple, despite the fact that I suck at numbers and think accountants are boring (except, of course, if you reading this is an accountant, in which case you rock!)

Alice (my stepmonster) wanted me to become a nurse. She saw it as the cheapest (tuition-wise for my dad) and easiest way for me to start earning a living to help support her when my dad retired. She was gonna make me go to Saudi Arabia (where nurses are paid relatively well) and send her buckets of money every month. I’m not sure what I wanted to be, but there’s this wanted when I wanted to be Mark Morrison’s (of ‘return of the mack’ fame) bitch!

So what’s this I’ve done to make ma proud? Well I’ve gone and developed a bit of a volunteerism spirit… I’m volunteering all over the city!
